PURPOSE

Several years ago, I started a men’s group, called ReGroup. It was for retired men and the purpose was to help older men explore what God’s purpose was for them in this phase of their lives. I was newly retired at the time so I was right there with them.

What I have learned is that as men and women leave their careers, a part of their identity leaves with their career. It’s unfortunate that we associate so much of our identity with our profession or work, but we do. My wife, who was primarily a homemaker after we married, struggled with the same thing after our children left the house.

Sometimes people need a nudge from someone else to find purpose again.

Let me share an inspirational story about Edna and how she found new meaning and purpose in her days and made some new friends along the way.

Edna sat by the window, watching the autumn leaves twirl to the ground. At 78, she often felt like those leaves—fading, fragile, and drifting. She missed the days when her calendar was full, and her body was strong.

One day, a knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. It was Sarah, her lively neighbor from across the street. "Edna, our community center is starting a mentorship program for young adults. I thought of you right away!"

Edna hesitated. What could she offer? Her hands ached too much to knit, her legs tired too quickly for long walks. But Sarah wouldn’t take no for an answer.

The next week, Edna found herself seated in a circle of young faces, each eager to learn from her life experience. She shared stories of her triumphs and failures, her joys and sorrows. What surprised her most was how much they wanted to listen, how her words seemed to light a spark in their eyes.

One evening, a young man named Jordan lingered after the session. “You remind me of my grandmother,” he said. “She always said I had a gift for music, but I never believed her. Listening to you makes me think maybe I should try again.”

Edna’s heart swelled. She had made a difference.

Over the months, she discovered a new rhythm to her days—writing letters of encouragement, baking treats for her mentees, and even learning a little about social media to keep up with them. Each interaction reminded her that, while her body might have slowed, her wisdom and love were as vibrant as ever.

One crisp morning, Jordan stopped by with a guitar in hand. “This is for you,” he said, playing a song he’d written. Tears streamed down Edna’s face as she realized something profound: she wasn’t drifting like the leaves. She was planting seeds.

And in that moment, Edna knew she was living her best chapter yet.

If you don’t feel like you have a purpose or anything left to offer, reflect on Edna’s story. God has a purpose for you no matter where you are on life’s journey. Find someone who can give you a nudge.
